Older orchid books describe a rig of four 40 watt fluorescent tubes plus two incandescent bulbs. That combination sat about 8 inches above the plants on a 14 hour timer.

Distance depends on bulb wattage and genus, not one fixed number. A weaker bulb needs to sit closer, and a high light genus needs to sit closer still.

A consistent schedule matters more than the exact hour a light turns on. Orchids track day length, so random on and off times confuse the pattern more than a slightly early start.

Specialty purple grow lights are common in commercial greenhouses chasing efficiency at scale. A home grower with a handful of pots does not need that level of engineering.

Does Light Alone Trigger Blooming?

No. Light supports growth, but Phalaenopsis still needs a temperature cue to set a spike. Extension and grower sources agree that cool nights, not light duration, do the work.

Nights of 55 to 65 F for two to four weeks are what trigger a Phal spike. A grow light left on 12 hours a day in a warm room will not substitute for that drop.
