Most orchids stop growing well once a room climbs past 95 F (35 C). A Phalaenopsis left below 50 F (10 C) for even a night can suffer damage that never heals. Orchid temperature needs are not one size fits all: a Cymbidium and a Vanda tolerate almost opposite conditions.
Knowing your plant’s group matters more than chasing one ideal number. So does knowing its safe minimum and the nightly drop that triggers blooms.
The three orchid temperature groups
Growers sort orchids into three broad groups: warm, intermediate, and cool. The group a plant belongs to says more about its needs than any single number does.
Warm growers such as Phalaenopsis, Vanda, and many Oncidium hybrids want daytime highs of 75 to 85 F (24 to 29 C). At night, they need temperatures no cooler than 65 to 70 F (18 to 21 C).
Intermediate growers include most Cattleya, Paphiopedilum, and warm type Dendrobium. They prefer 70 to 80 F (21 to 27 C) by day and 58 to 65 F (14 to 18 C) at night.

Most homes run intermediate to warm. That is one reason Phalaenopsis and Cattleya dominate windowsills while Cymbidium struggles indoors without a cool spot.

Why the night drop matters for blooming
A drop of 10 to 15 F (6 to 8 C) between day and night is the trigger for many orchids. It pushes them from leaf growth into spiking. Cattleya, Dendrobium, and Oncidium all rely on this nightly swing.

Phalaenopsis is the exception that trips up most guides. Research from Michigan State University found that day temperature, not night temperature, controls flower spike initiation in Phalaenopsis. Plants held below about 79 F (26 C) during the day for several weeks will spike.
This happens even without a cold night. This runs against the blanket night drop advice repeated across most orchid sites. It explains why some growers get spikes from nothing more than a cooler room in fall.
Minimum temperatures and cold damage by genus
Every genus has a point where cold stops being uncomfortable and starts causing real damage. The table below lists safe minimums and the first visible sign that a plant has gone too far.

Phalaenopsis is the most cold sensitive genus most people own. Below 50 F (10 C), even briefly, the leaves develop water soaked, sunken patches that turn black within a few days.
This damage never reverses. A single cold car ride home or an unheated porch overnight is enough to cause it.
Maximum temperatures and heat stress
Heat stress starts around 95 F (35 C) for most orchids. Growth slows and open flowers fade faster than usual. Above 104 F (40 C), photosynthesis shuts down in most orchid species.
Leaves can scorch even without direct sun. Air movement and humidity both raise the safe ceiling. That is why the same 95 F (35 C) day feels fine on a shaded, breezy porch.

Drafts and other temperature stress
A draft does more damage than the room’s average temperature suggests. Cold air leaking from a window in winter can chill the leaves nearest it. Hot air blasting from a heating vent can scorch them just as fast.
This happens even when the rest of the room reads normal. Keep orchids at least 3 feet (1 meter) from exterior doors, single pane windows, and HVAC vents.

The fall temperature trigger
Many orchids read the arrival of cooler fall nights as the season to bloom. A few weeks of nights in the mid 50s to low 60s F (13 to 16 C) trigger spiking.
This happens in Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, and Oncidium, as long as daytime highs stay above 70 F (21 C). This is also the same window many growers use to bring outdoor plants back inside before the first frost.
Moving orchids outdoors and back in
Moving orchids outside for summer can improve growth. The timing depends on the coldest overnight lows in your area. Cymbidium tolerates nights down to 40 F (4 C).

A season by season view
Spring and fall are transition seasons. Check nightly lows often as temperatures swing, and be ready to move sensitive plants at short notice. Summer is usually the easiest season indoors.
Most homes stay within the warm to intermediate range without any help. Winter is the riskiest season. Drafts, heating vents, and cold windowsills do more damage than the outdoor temperature itself.
