1,000 to 3,000 foot candles a day: that is the general range most orchid genera need. Measure light at the leaf, not at the window.
That range answers how much light do orchids need better than the vague phrase “bright indirect light” ever could. The right number depends on the genus, the window, and the season.
How much light do orchids need, by genus
Foot candles measure how much usable light reaches a leaf surface. The American Orchid Society uses this measure in its own culture sheets. It is the number worth tracking with a meter or an app.

Sources disagree on the upper end for cattleya. The American Orchid Society’s general light guide lists a 3,000 fc ceiling.
Its genus specific Cattleya culture sheet lists 3,500 fc instead. Trust the genus specific sheet: it reflects cultivation data for that plant, not a rounded average across many genera.

Oncidium and dendrobium are the two genera where the range above varies the most in practice. A thin leaved oncidium like a sharry baby type wants closer to 2,000 fc. A thicker leaved equitant oncidium can handle 3,000 fc or more without stress.
Dendrobium follows a similar split. Soft cane types from cooler growing regions do well near 2,000 fc. Hard cane types bred for heavy bloom often want 3,000 to 4,000 fc to flower reliably.
Humidity also changes how much light a plant can safely handle. Growers consistently report that the same orchid tolerates more light at 60 percent humidity than at 30 percent. Higher humidity keeps leaf cells cooler and better hydrated, so they handle strong light without damage.
How to measure light with a phone app
A lux meter app gives a rough but useful reading. Hold the phone at leaf height, facing the same direction as the leaf. Take the reading at the time of day the plant gets its brightest light.
Most apps report lux, and one foot candle equals about 10.76 lux. Divide the lux reading by 10.76 to get foot candles, then compare it to the table above.
Phone light sensors are not lab instruments, so treat the number as a guide, not a certainty. The short answer to how much light do orchids need is a number range. It is not a direction like “east” or “bright.”
Take three readings a day if you can: morning, midday, and late afternoon. A spot that reads 1,200 fc at 10 a.m. can read 400 fc by 3 p.m.
That happens once a tree outside leafs out or the sun moves past a building. A single reading can be misleading, so check the level more than once a day.
The shadow test, for a quick check without an app
Hold your hand about 8 inches above a plain white sheet of paper at midday on a clear day. The shadow you see maps to a rough light level. It works well as a gut check between meter readings.
- A sharp, dark shadow with a crisp edge means full sun, around 10,000 fc. Too bright for most orchids indoors.
- A shadow with soft edges means bright light, around 4,000 to 6,000 fc: right for cattleya and vanda.
- A faint, fuzzy shadow means medium light, around 2,000 to 3,000 fc: right for oncidium and dendrobium.
- Almost no visible shadow means low light, under 1,500 fc. Right for phalaenopsis and paphiopedilum, too dim for the rest.
Window direction, what actually works
An east window gives gentle morning sun and rarely burns leaves. It works well for phalaenopsis and paphiopedilum without a curtain. A south or west window gives much stronger, hotter light, especially from late spring through early fall.
A north window is usually too dim for anything but the lowest light orchids. It often needs a grow light as a supplement.
Cattleya, dendrobium, oncidium, and vanda generally want a south or west window. A few hours of direct sun through an east window also works.
Move plants back 2 to 3 feet from south or west glass in summer. This cuts the intensity without losing the brightness.

Apartment growers without a strong window are not out of options. A sheer curtained west window paired with a small grow light often outperforms an unfiltered north window. The combination gets both intensity and consistency.
Direct sun rules by season
Direct sun is not automatically bad, but the season changes the risk. Winter sun sits lower in the sky and carries less heat. A few hours of direct winter sun through a south window rarely causes damage.
Summer sun is a different problem. A phalaenopsis left in an unfiltered south window in July can scorch within a single afternoon.
It develops sunken brown or black patches ringed with yellow. The sun angle is higher then and the glass traps heat, so damage happens fast.
The fix is not to avoid south windows. Filter them from spring through early fall, using a sheer curtain or by moving the plant back. Reverse the setup in winter, when the same window becomes a good source of extra light.
Spring is the riskiest transition, not summer itself. A plant that wintered comfortably in a south window can scorch in April or May if left in place.
The sun angle climbs and day length increases fast during that stretch. Watch leaves closely rather than waiting for the first hot week.
When moving a plant to a brighter spot on purpose, do it gradually. Increase exposure over 10 to 14 days instead of all at once. Leaves that formed in low light lack the protective pigments a plant builds up under strong light over time.
Too much light vs too little light
Too little light shows up slowly. Leaves stay dark green and soft, and growth is weak. The plant may look healthy for months while it simply refuses to flower.
Too much light shows up fast. Leaves develop bleached yellow patches or sunburn spots within a day of a sudden move to bright light. Flower buds can drop or develop spots of their own.
The leaf color gauge helps here, but the target color depends on the genus. On a cattleya, a light, almost yellow green means the light is correct, while dark green means too little.
On a phalaenopsis, that same yellow green test does not apply. Phalaenopsis leaves normally stay medium to dark green even under correct light. Pushing them toward yellow green usually means too much sun, not too little.
This is a common mix up. Growers apply the cattleya color rule to a plant that was never supposed to turn that color.
Light and reblooming
Insufficient light is one of the most common reasons a healthy looking orchid will not rebloom. A plant can survive for years on too little light without dying. It will rarely put out a flower spike under those conditions.
Some genera also need a change in day length or temperature to trigger flowering, not just more light. Certain cattleya, dendrobium, and phalaenopsis types respond to shorter days or a temperature drop in fall. That adds a seasonal trigger on top of the light requirement.

When to add a grow light
