Types of Orchids: The Main Genera and How to Choose

Fewer than 15 of the roughly 800 orchid genera show up in garden centers and grocery stores. Learn which of the main types of orchids you are holding, and most other care questions answer themselves. This guide sorts the orchid varieties a home grower actually meets by how they grow.

This page is about choosing among the orchid types on purpose, not naming a plant you already have. Shoppers hear different kinds of orchids used loosely for plants with very different needs. Sorting the main orchid breeds sold as houseplants by how they actually grow fixes that confusion fast.

Types of orchids by growth habit

Every orchid genus grows one of two ways. That single trait predicts care better than flower color ever will. Monopodial orchids grow from one stem that keeps getting taller.

They add leaves from the top and roots along the stem. Sympodial orchids spread sideways along a rhizome instead. Each season they send up a new growth, often a water storing pseudobulb.

Monopodial types have no pseudobulbs to store water. Their thick roots and leaves do that job. That is why Phalaenopsis and Vanda tolerate drying out better than most thin rooted sympodial types.

Sympodial orchids rest after each new growth matures. Many need a temperature drop or a dry spell to trigger the next bloom. Skipping that rest is the top reason a healthy looking plant refuses to flower.

If you cannot name your genus yet, check the roots and stem first. No pseudobulbs and one upright stem means care it like a monopodial type: keep it slightly moist and skip the dry rest. Visible pseudobulbs or a fan of growths along a rhizome means treat it as sympodial, and let it dry down more between waterings.

Growth habit also decides how often you repot. Monopodial orchids like Phalaenopsis and Vanda need fresh medium every one to two years as bark breaks down. Sympodial orchids can often wait until new growths reach the pot’s edge, sometimes three years or more.

Phalaenopsis (moth orchid)

Phalaenopsis is the orchid most people meet first, sold in supermarkets year round. It grows one fan of thick, fleshy leaves and blooms on an arching spike. That spike can rebloom from a cut node for a year or more.

Vanda

Vanda is monopodial like Phalaenopsis but built for a very different setup. Most Vandas grow bare root in slatted baskets with no potting medium at all. Their thick roots hang in open air and need near daily watering.

They also want strong light, often several hours of direct morning sun, to bloom well. Extension guidance and grower experience agree on one point. Vandas struggle indoors away from a greenhouse or a very bright, humid porch.

Dendrobium

Dendrobium is the largest orchid genus most growers will meet. Plants sold as houseplants usually belong to one of two different groups. Phalaenopsis type Dendrobium hybrids want warmth and even moisture year round, much like a Phalaenopsis.

Nobile type Dendrobiums are deciduous and need a cooler, drier rest to bloom. That rest runs 50 to 55 F (10 to 13 C) for four to six weeks in fall. Skipping it is the top reason these plants grow tall canes but never flower.

Cattleya

Cattleya is the classic corsage orchid, with large, fragrant flowers and thick water storing pseudobulbs. It wants strong light, close to what a Vanda gets. Unlike Phalaenopsis, it should dry out fully between waterings.

Cattleyas generally prefer conditions above 55 F (13 C). Protect them below 50 F (10 C), especially while in bud.

Oncidium and its relatives

Oncidium, the dancing lady orchid, is often marketed to beginners as easy. That claim is only half true. It needs more frequent watering and stronger airflow than Phalaenopsis, or its thin roots rot.

Many plants sold as Oncidium today are intergeneric hybrids crossed with Brassia or Miltonia. That crossing shifts their light and water needs slightly from a pure Oncidium species.

Cymbidium

Cymbidium is often sold as a hardy, cool growing orchid, and that reputation is only half true. American Orchid Society guidance puts its ideal minimum night temperature at 40 F (4.5 C). It tolerates brief dips into the mid 30s F (1 to 2 C), but a hard freeze still causes cold damage.

That makes Cymbidium more cold tolerant than a Phalaenopsis. It is not, though, a true garden perennial across most of the country. Leaving one outside all winter is a common way to lose it.

Paphiopedilum (lady slipper orchid)

Paphiopedilum is easy to spot by its pouch shaped lower petal. It is one of the few orchid genera that prefers even, constant moisture over a dry down cycle. It also tolerates lower light than most orchids.

That makes it a genuinely good fit for a north facing window or a desk. Paphiopedilum has no pseudobulbs and no drought tolerance. Letting it dry out for more than a day or two can cost it roots.

Miltoniopsis

Miltoniopsis, the pansy orchid, needs cooler temperatures and higher humidity than most beginner genera. Think Phalaenopsis conditions, but with more airflow moving through the leaves.

Its thin roots are sensitive to fertilizer buildup. They show it fast, with pleated, accordion like leaves. This is a genus for a grower who already has humidity and airflow under control, not a true first orchid.

Zygopetalum

Zygopetalum makes heavily fragrant, waxy flowers in green, purple, and brown tones. It grows best at intermediate temperatures with consistent moisture.

It is more forgiving of lower light than a Cattleya. Its roots still need to dry slightly between waterings, and it dislikes mineral buildup from hard tap water. Growers often recommend it as a step up plant once someone has kept a Phalaenopsis alive for a full year.

Brassia

Brassia, the spider orchid, is named for its long, narrow petals and grown much like Oncidium. It wants strong light and frequent watering during active growth. It tolerates a wider temperature range than many sympodial genera, and it is genuinely less fussy than its dramatic flowers suggest.

Epidendrum

Epidendrum is a large, varied genus. The reed stem hybrids sold as houseplants, though, are some of the toughest orchids around. They tolerate more light and less humidity than most genera on this list.

They bloom in clusters at the tip of tall canes, often nearly continuously. Watering every four to five days during active growth, and less often in cooler months, works for most reed stem types.

Ludisia (jewel orchid)

Ludisia is grown for its velvety, dark leaves with pink veining, not its small white flower spikes. It is one of the only orchids that genuinely thrives in low light.

It has no pseudobulbs and wants soil that stays moist, never soggy. This is a solid pick for a dim room where most other genera on this list would fail.

Masdevallia

Masdevallia makes small, triangular, often bright flowers on compact plants. It needs cool temperatures and high humidity, conditions closer to a mountain cloud forest than a living room.

It resents heat and dry air. Warm indoor conditions are the main reason this genus struggles outside a cool basement or a climate controlled greenhouse.

Bletilla (hardy ground orchid)

Bletilla stands out on this list as a genuinely cold hardy, terrestrial orchid. It is rated for USDA zones 5a through 9b. It can be planted directly in a garden bed across most of the country.

North Carolina State Extension notes it prefers partial shade and damp, well drained, organically rich soil. It will not tolerate wet, waterlogged ground over winter.

In zone 5 or colder, growers often keep it in a container and move it somewhere protected for winter. Unlike Cymbidium, which people often mistake for a hardy garden plant, Bletilla actually earns that description.

How to choose by your window and room temperature

Matching types of orchids to the room you actually have beats picking by flower color every time.

Average room temperature, around 65 to 75 F (18 to 24 C), with an east or shaded south window, suits several genera well. Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum, and reed stem Epidendrum all do fine there. A warm, dim home leaves Ludisia as the one genus here truly bred for low light.

A bright south or west window, or a sunroom, changes the picture. Cattleya, Oncidium, and Brassia will actually bloom there instead of just surviving. Without that light, all three tend to grow leaves and skip flowers.

Genuinely cool nights, below 60 F (15.6 C), open the door to Cymbidium and Masdevallia. Only Cymbidium is realistic without a climate controlled space. Masdevallia also needs humidity most homes cannot sustain.

An outdoor bed in USDA zone 5 or warmer makes Bletilla the only genus on this list that belongs in the ground. Growers chasing fragrance often add Zygopetalum or Cattleya once they have a steady watering rhythm. Both genera punish inconsistency more than they punish one missed week.

Water quality matters as much as the schedule for some genera. Miltoniopsis and Zygopetalum both dislike the mineral buildup that hard tap water leaves in the pot over time. Rain water or distilled water solves that problem for growers in hard water areas.

A genus sold as beginner friendly is not always beginner safe. Oncidium and Miltoniopsis sit next to Phalaenopsis at many retailers. Both need more water and better airflow than a typical apartment provides.

Their fine roots rot faster than a Phalaenopsis root ever would. Of all the types of orchids on this list, those two reward experience more than beginner luck.

Fertilizer needs also track growth habit more than genus name. Monopodial orchids with year round growth, like Phalaenopsis and Vanda, take a weak, balanced fertilizer every other watering during active growth. Sympodial orchids with a clear rest period, like nobile Dendrobium and Cymbidium, should get little or no fertilizer during that rest.
