Orchid care comes down to six things: light, water, humidity, temperature, feeding, and a potting mix that drains. Get those right and a store bought orchid will rebloom for years. Get one wrong and the plant often looks fine for months, then fails all at once.

Light
Most orchids sold as houseplants, mainly Phalaenopsis, want bright indirect light, not direct sun. An east facing window is close to ideal. A south or west window works too if filtered with a sheer curtain, since unfiltered afternoon sun can scorch a leaf.
Leaf color is a fast diagnostic. Medium apple green means the light level is close to right. Dark green usually means too little light, which is why some plants never flower.
A leaf that turns yellowish or reddish has had too much light. Move that plant back from the window a few inches.
A plant that produces plenty of leaves but never spikes is usually getting enough water and fertilizer but not enough light. Growers often assume the opposite and cut back on feeding instead. Increasing light, not changing the feeding routine, is what usually gets a stalled Phalaenopsis to bloom again.
Light needs vary a lot by genus, and this is where generic advice falls apart. Phalaenopsis grows well at 1,000 to 1,500 foot candles, the dimmest tolerance of any common orchid. Cattleya, Vanda, and most Dendrobium want 2,000 to 3,000 foot candles or more, closer to a bright greenhouse bench.
If a window cannot give a plant that much light, add a grow light. A full spectrum LED placed 6 to 12 inches above the foliage closes the gap.
Duration matters alongside intensity. Most common orchids do best with 12 to 14 hours of light a day during active growth. Give them a shorter day in winter.
Forcing a long artificial day year round can delay the rest period some genera need before they spike again. A shorter winter day is part of what tells the plant a new bloom cycle is coming.

Water
The single biggest mistake in orchid care is watering on a fixed schedule instead of watching the plant. Roots tell you what it needs. Silvery gray roots mean the mix has dried out and it is time to water.
Green or dark roots still hold moisture. Leave those alone.
This is also where standard advice quietly fails. A “water once a week” rule works fine for a Phalaenopsis in coarse bark, since bark drains fast. The same rule overwaters a plant in sphagnum moss, which holds water far longer.
A moss potted orchid often only needs water every 10 to 14 days. Potting medium, pot size, humidity, and airflow all change how fast a plant dries out. No single number applies to every orchid, so check roots and pot weight instead of counting days.
A pot that still feels heavy is not ready for more water, no matter what day it is. For Phalaenopsis and most other common orchids, water thoroughly until it runs freely from the drainage holes. Let the mix approach dryness before watering again, and never let a pot sit in standing water.
Water quality matters more for some genera than others. Ordinary tap water suits most Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium if it is not heavily softened. Softened water adds sodium that builds up in the mix.
Vanda and some Paphiopedilum are more sensitive to mineral buildup. They do better with rainwater or distilled water, especially in areas with hard tap water.

Decision rule: if the roots are silver and the leaves are still firm, water now. If the roots are silver but a leaf has gone soft or wrinkled, water right away. Then check the roots for rot before assuming light or humidity is the problem, since soft leaves on a plant with intact roots point to root damage that watering alone will not fix.
Humidity and air movement
Most orchids come from places far more humid than the average home. A range of 40 to 70 percent relative humidity covers the common genera. Vanda and other epiphytes sit on the higher end.
Indoor winter humidity, especially with forced air heat running, often drops into the 20s or low 30s. That gap is why leaf tips turn crispy and buds drop in the coldest months, even when watering looks correct.
A humidity tray, a room humidifier, or grouping plants together all raise the air around the foliage. None of these waterlog the roots the way overwatering does. Misting alone raises humidity for only a few minutes, so it does little on its own.
Moving air matters just as much as moisture. A small fan running nearby keeps leaves dry after watering. That cuts the risk of fungal and bacterial spotting.
Temperature and the day night drop
Temperature range matters, but the drop between day and night matters just as much for reblooming. Most common orchids need a 10 to 15 F drop from day to night to trigger a flower spike. That almost never happens in a house held at one steady temperature all year.
Genus baselines differ enough that one number for “orchids” is not useful advice. Phalaenopsis is a warm grower and should not sit below 60 F (16 C) at night for long stretches. A deliberate chill to around 55 F (13 C) for two or three weeks in fall can help trigger blooming.
Cattleya tolerates night temperatures down to about 55 F (13 C) and likes a wider day to night spread. Dendrobium varies the most by section. Some types tolerate nights in the low 40s F (around 5 C), while others need at least 60 F (16 C).
Oncidium generally holds up to night temperatures in the mid 40s to mid 50s F (7 to 13 C). Vanda is the least cold tolerant of the common genera and should stay above 60 F (16 C) at night. Species vandas are the exception, tolerating the low 40s F (around 5 C).
A sustained temperature below a genus minimum causes bud drop and root damage. That damage often shows up well before a leaf shows visible cold injury. Cold drafts cause damage faster than a slowly falling room temperature does.
A leaf pressed against cold winter glass can suffer localized damage even when the room itself reads a safe temperature. Keep a few inches of clearance between foliage and single pane windows on cold nights.
Feeding
Orchids grow in bark or moss with almost no nutritional value on its own. Regular feeding is not optional if you want strong growth and repeat blooms. The standard approach among experienced growers is “weakly weekly.”
That means a balanced fertilizer diluted to a quarter or half of label strength. Apply it at most once a week during active growth.
Full strength fertilizer builds up mineral salts in the mix over time. So does fertilizer applied on wet roots without ever flushing.
That salt buildup, not the fertilizer itself, is the actual cause behind most feeding related orchid deaths. Flush the pot with plain water once a month to clear built up salts. Skip fertilizer entirely in winter for genera that slow down when light drops.

Potting and repotting
Orchid roots need airflow. That is why they are potted in chunky bark, sphagnum moss, or a semi hydroponic setup, never regular potting soil. Soil packs too tight and suffocates roots within weeks.
Bark breaks down over one to two years. As it decomposes it starts holding too much water. That is the main reason repotting matters, even for a healthy plant.
Repot when the mix breaks down into mush or when roots push far outside the pot. Also repot when watering that used to work now dries out too fast.
New growth just starting is the best window, since roots recover fastest then. Avoid repotting a plant in active bloom unless its roots are in visible distress.
Choose a pot only one size up from the current one. An oversized pot holds excess moisture around roots the plant is not yet using, and that invites rot.
Vanda and some mounted species skip pots and media entirely. They grow in a basket or on a mount with exposed roots, which is why they need more frequent watering.

After bloom care
Once flowers fade, what you do with the spike depends on the genus. On a Phalaenopsis, a spike that is still green can be cut back to just above a healthy node. That sometimes produces a second, smaller bloom.
A spike that has turned brown or yellow should be cut at the base instead. It will not flower again.
For Cattleya, Dendrobium, Oncidium, and most other genera, the flower spike or pseudobulb does not rebloom. Cut the spent spike at the base once it fully browns. The plant’s energy afterward goes into building the next pseudobulb or leaf growth.
Resume regular feeding as soon as new growth appears. That new growth, not the old spike, is what carries the next round of flowers.
Seasonal rhythm
Orchid care is not the same task all year. Spring and summer are active growth months for most genera, with more light, more frequent watering, and full strength feeding.
Fall often brings the temperature drop that triggers spikes, especially for Phalaenopsis. This is not the season to skip cooler nights near a window.
Winter is the slow season for most common orchids. Growth slows, watering intervals stretch out, and feeding usually pauses or drops to a lighter dose. Heated homes also lose humidity fast in winter, so this is when a humidity tray or humidifier earns its keep.

General orchid advice usually assumes a Phalaenopsis. The common genera differ enough in light, water, and temperature needs that one rule for all of them causes real problems.

The 8 mistakes that kill orchids
- Watering on a fixed calendar. Roots and pot weight tell you when to water. A calendar ignores changes in season, humidity, and mix breakdown.
- Letting the pot sit in water. Standing water in a cachepot or saucer suffocates roots. Rot can set in within days.
- Too little light, mistaken for too much. A plant that will not bloom usually needs more light, not less. Growers often assume the opposite and move it further from the window.
- Fertilizing at full label strength. Full strength salts build up in the mix and burn root tips. This is worse without a monthly plain water flush.
- Ignoring the day night temperature drop. A house held at one steady temperature year round removes the cue many orchids need to spike.
- Repotting into soil or an oversized pot. Both trap excess moisture around roots that need airflow to survive.
- Cutting a healthy green Phalaenopsis spike at the base. That spike may still produce a second bloom if left at a node instead.
- Ignoring humidity in winter. Heated indoor air often falls well below the 40 percent minimum most orchids need. That causes tip burn and bud loss.
Most of these mistakes come from treating one orchid like every other houseplant. A little attention to what the specific genus and mix actually need prevents nearly all of them.
