What an orchid actually is
Orchidaceae is one of the two largest flowering plant families on earth. Kew Gardens counts around 28,000 known species. It groups them into roughly 850 genera, found on every continent except Antarctica.
That range is why “orchid” covers plants as different as a windowsill Phalaenopsis and a cold growing Cymbidium. The word names a family, not one type of plant.
Most orchid plants sold as houseplants are epiphytes. In the wild they grow attached to tree trunks and branches. They do not root in soil at all.
Their roots are thick, often silvery green. A spongy layer called velamen covers them. It soaks up water fast and dries out fast between rains.
That is the opposite of how a normal potted houseplant lives. It is why regular potting soil suffocates orchid roots. Soil holds water around the roots for days at a time.
Bark, sphagnum moss, and other orchid specific mixes work differently. They let air reach the roots between waterings. That is what the roots evolved to expect.
Orchid flowers also share a family resemblance across all 28,000 species. Every flower has three petals and three sepals. One petal is modified into a lip, called the labellum, which acts as a landing platform for pollinators.
Male and female parts fuse into a single structure called the column. Most other flowering plants keep those parts separate. That fused column is one of the traits botanists use to confirm a plant belongs to Orchidaceae, even when the flower color or size looks nothing like a typical orchid plant in flower.
Orchids also split into two growth patterns. Knowing which one you own changes how you read the plant.
- Sympodial orchids grow sideways along a rhizome, adding a new lead growth each year. Many, including Cattleya, Dendrobium, Oncidium, and Cymbidium, store water in swollen stem sections called pseudobulbs. A shriveled pseudobulb is an early warning sign, and a firm one is a good one.
- Monopodial orchids grow upward from a single stem, adding new leaves from the center while roots grow out along the stem. Phalaenopsis and Vanda are the monopodial types most people meet first. They have no pseudobulbs, so their leaves act as the water reserve instead.
Paphiopedilum, the lady slipper orchid, is sympodial but never forms pseudobulbs. That is one reason its care differs enough to earn its own guide.
The 6 orchids you will meet in stores
A small number of genera account for nearly everything sold as an orchid plant in the United States. Most orchid plants in flower on a store shelf belong to just one of these six genera. Here is what separates them at a glance.

- Dendrobium: upright canes lined with smaller flowers, often sold in multiples per pot. It needs more light than Phalaenopsis. Many popular hybrids also need a cooler, drier rest period to trigger the next bloom.
- Cattleya: large, fragrant flowers on plants with prominent pseudobulbs. It wants bright light, close to what a south facing window without direct summer sun provides. It also dries out faster between waterings than Phalaenopsis.
- Oncidium: branching sprays of small flowers, often yellow and brown. Growers sometimes call it the dancing lady orchid. It prefers frequent watering with a fast drying mix, not the drench and wait approach that suits Cattleya.
- Cymbidium: strappy leaves and tall spikes of long lasting flowers, usually sold in late winter. It needs a real nighttime drop, ideally into the 50s F (10 to 15 C), to set spikes. That makes it a poor fit for a warm apartment year round.
- Vanda: thick roots, often left exposed to air in slatted baskets rather than potted at all. It wants the most light and the most frequent watering of the group. In a home with low humidity, that can mean daily watering.
Paphiopedilum and Miltonia show up often enough to mention too. Paphiopedilum tolerates lower light like Phalaenopsis but wants steadier moisture. Miltonia wants humidity close to Oncidium’s but is fussier about even watering, since its thin leaves show stress fast.

The annual rhythm: grow, spike, bloom, rest
A healthy orchid is not doing the same thing every month. Most genera move through a yearly cycle. Knowing where a plant sits in that cycle explains a lot of behavior that would otherwise look like a problem.
Active growth: new leaves or pseudobulbs form, and roots extend. The plant uses more water and fertilizer than at any other time. For Phalaenopsis this often runs spring through summer.
Spiking: a flower spike emerges. On Phalaenopsis it usually rises from the base of the leaves. On Cattleya or Dendrobium types it comes from a new pseudobulb instead, and growth slows while energy shifts into the spike.
Bloom: flowers open. Depending on genus, they last anywhere from 2 weeks (some Dendrobium) to 3 months (Phalaenopsis). Watering and light needs should stay steady now, since big changes can cause buds to drop.
Rest: after bloom, many orchids slow down and use noticeably less water for several weeks to a few months.

A Phalaenopsis watered weekly during its rest phase, the same as during active growth, is a common setup for root rot. The plant simply is not using the water it gets.
The 5 numbers that matter
Every orchid genus has its own preferences. These five ranges cover the plants most people bring home first: mainly Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, and Cattleya.

What most beginners get wrong
The single biggest mistake is treating an orchid like a standard houseplant in soil. Store bought orchids usually arrive in a plastic nursery pot filled with sphagnum moss or bark. That pot often sits inside a decorative outer pot with no drainage hole.
Watered on a normal houseplant schedule, that setup holds water against the roots for days. Orchid roots that stay wet that long lose their velamen covering and turn brown and mushy. They stop taking up water, the plant wilts, and owners often respond by watering even more.
A second common error is repotting into ordinary potting mix. Some people also try to plant orchid plant material straight from a nursery pot into a bigger pot of soil. That is how you would repot any other houseplant, but orchid roots need the air gaps that bark or a coarse mix provides.

A grocery store or big box orchid plant in flower is usually mass produced under controlled greenhouse conditions, timed to be blooming at purchase. It then ships and sits on display under lower light than it was grown in. A plant from a specialty orchid nursery is more likely to be a named hybrid or species. Growers often choose it for a trait such as fragrance or flower shape. It is usually grown closer to its preferred conditions and sold with clearer genus information.
