Why Seed Growing Takes Years
Orchid seeds are almost nothing but embryo. They carry virtually no endosperm, the food reserve most plant seeds rely on. In the wild, a seed needs infection by a specific mycorrhizal fungus just to germinate at all.

Every copy grows in a sterile flask under controlled conditions. This is why a tray of seedlings in an orchid flask can turn into hundreds of nearly identical plants.
Growers also propagate some genera without cloning equipment at all. Cattleyas and dendrobiums can be divided into separate pieces once a mature plant has grown for several years.
Dendrobiums often form keikis, small but complete plantlets that grow along the stem. Growers can pot these up on their own.
Division and keikis work well for a home grower with one plant. They do not scale the way tissue culture does. That difference explains a lot of the price gap between a mass produced Phal and a specialty division.
