Botanist Richard Sanders Rogers formally described the plant soon after and named it Rhizanthella gardneri. A related eastern species turned up a few years later near Bulahdelah in New South Wales. Both discoveries relied on accidental digging rather than a planned botanical search.
That pattern has repeated ever since. Most known populations were found by chance, during land clearing, road work, or routine bushland surveys. Deliberate searches still struggle to locate the plant on purpose.
The Species of Underground Orchid
Rhizanthella now includes several recognized species, split between Western and Eastern Australia. The western species is Rhizanthella gardneri. The main eastern species is Rhizanthella slateri.
Additional eastern species have been described more recently. Botanists keep finding subtle differences as they study eastern populations more closely. Each new species tends to have a narrower known range than the last.

How It Feeds Without Leaves
A plant with no chlorophyll cannot make its own food. This orchid is fully mycoheterotrophic, meaning it takes all of its carbon and nutrients from a fungus. That fungus links the plant to a living companion shrub instead of the sun.
In Western Australia, the fungus partner connects Rhizanthella gardneri to Melaleuca uncinata, commonly called broom honey myrtle. The fungus already forms a normal partnership with the myrtle’s roots. The orchid taps into that existing network rather than building one of its own.
