Monopodial orchids need more frequent watering. They also need more frequent feeding, because they lack that fleshy reserve. Their roots and leaves do the storage work instead.

This is one place where a one size fits all watering schedule fails badly. A Cattleya with plump pseudobulbs can often wait longer between waterings than a Phalaenopsis nearby. Phalaenopsis in bark typically needs water every 7 to 10 days.

In moss, that interval stretches to every 10 to 14 days. Neither number applies to a mature Cattleya or Oncidium with full pseudobulbs. Growers who mix genera in one collection often learn this the hard way, watering everything on the same schedule.

Wrinkled Pseudobulbs Decoded

A wrinkled pseudobulb is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Older, leafless back bulbs commonly wrinkle a little as they age and slowly give up their reserves. That kind of gentle wrinkling on an otherwise healthy plant is rarely a problem worth chasing.

Wrinkling on the newest, leaf bearing pseudobulb is different and worth investigating. It usually means the plant is not taking up enough water, even if the mix feels moist on top. Growers on gardening forums often describe this exact mismatch: wet looking media with a shriveling bulb underneath.

The most common cause is root loss, not a lack of watering effort. Roots damaged by rot or salt buildup cannot pull in water. Old, broken down media causes the same problem even when it is available.

Check roots before changing the watering schedule. More water will not fix dead roots. This is where a lot of grower advice goes wrong.

Cattleya growers generally avoid dividing a plant until it has at least six mature pseudobulbs. When dividing, most guidance leaves at least three to five pseudobulbs per section. Fewer than that and the new division often struggles to establish.
