And it has to hold just enough moisture that roots do not dry out completely for days at a time. A mix that only handles one of these jobs well is not a complete orchid growing medium.

Every bagged orchid potting medium is built from a small set of materials. They are usually combined rather than used alone. Each one changes how the substrate handles air, water, and nutrients.
Fir Bark
Fir bark is the backbone of most commercial orchid mixes. Chunks stay rigid for a long time. That keeps air pockets open around the roots.

Sphagnum Moss

Perlite

LECA

Bark vs Moss: When Each One Wins
