Home growers often save eggshells for orchids, treating them as a free, natural calcium booster. That idea is only partly true. Eggshells are almost pure calcium carbonate, and calcium carbonate barely dissolves in water at all.
Most orchids in bark or moss get enough calcium already, from tap water and from a complete fertilizer. The real questions are what a shell actually contains, when a calcium shortage is real, and what works better than a shell in the pot.
What Eggshells Actually Contain
An eggshell is roughly 94 percent calcium carbonate, the same mineral in limestone and chalk. Calcium carbonate is almost insoluble in plain water. That is why a shell can sit in a pot for months and barely change.
Roots absorb calcium as dissolved ions, not as solid mineral chips. A crushed shell has to break down chemically before a plant can use any of it. In a bark or moss pot, that breakdown is very slow.
Why Orchids Rarely Need Extra Calcium
Most tap water already carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Municipal water in the United States commonly carries enough of both. It supplies orchids with baseline minerals every time you water.
A complete fertilizer formulated for orchids, such as the Michigan State University formula many growers use, covers this already. It includes calcium and magnesium along with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. If you already use one, adding eggshells for orchids on top brings very little extra benefit.
Calcium deficiency is a real but immobile nutrient problem. According to the American Orchid Society, immobile nutrients show up in new growth, not old leaves. The plant cannot move them once they are locked in.
The Honest Verdict on Eggshell Water and Crushed Shell
Eggshell tea, made by steeping shells in water, pulls out only a trace of calcium. The mineral needs an acid to dissolve, and plain water is not acidic enough to do much work.
Crushed shell as a top dressing behaves the same way in the pot. It sits on the bark or moss and releases calcium at a crawl. As it slowly weathers, it also raises the surrounding pH.
Leftover egg residue on unwashed shells attracts fungus gnats fast. Gnats breed in damp organic matter, and a shell with membrane still attached is exactly that.

When Calcium Deficiency Is Real
Soft, floppy new growth is a warning sign worth taking seriously. Deformed or puckered new leaves point the same direction. Calcium builds cell walls in tissue that is still forming.
The American Orchid Society notes that calcium deficiency starts at the leaf tip. It turns pitch black, with no yellow border around the damage. That differs from a potassium salt burn, which also blacks the tip but follows a heavier feeding history.
Growers using reverse osmosis water are the most likely to see true calcium gaps. RO membranes block about 99 percent of dissolved ions, so the output water is close to mineral free.
You need to remineralize that water or fertilize every time you water.
A Better Fix Than Eggshells for Orchids
If new growth looks weak, switch your attention to the fertilizer, not the compost bin. A balanced orchid fertilizer that lists calcium and magnesium on the label covers the gap directly and predictably.
Use it at quarter to half label strength, applied on a regular schedule rather than as an occasional dose. That range matches general orchid fertilizer guidance and avoids the salt buildup that comes from feeding too heavy.
Flush the pot with plain water every two to four weeks. The American Orchid Society recommends this to prevent salt buildup. It matters more for RO water users, since they fertilize at every watering.

If You Still Want to Use Eggshells
Some growers still want to try eggshells for orchids despite the slow payoff. That is a reasonable choice if done carefully.
Rinse shells fully clean of any egg white or membrane first. Leftover residue is what draws gnats and mold.
Bake the clean shells at a low oven temperature until fully dry and brittle. Grind them into a fine powder rather than leaving chunks, since a finer particle breaks down faster.
Use only a small pinch mixed into fresh bark at repotting time. Skip this in moss entirely, since moss already holds moisture. A slow calcium source adds little there while the fungus gnat risk goes up.
Genus Differences Worth Knowing
Phalaenopsis grown in bark gets most of its mineral supply from water and fertilizer, not from the medium itself. Bark breaks down slowly and holds very little calcium on its own.
Terrestrial orchids such as Cymbidium and Paphiopedilum grow in soil like mixes that already contain more mineral content. These genera tolerate calcium carbonate additions better than epiphytes do. Their roots sit in a denser, more alkaline tolerant medium.
Cattleya and Dendrobium, both mounted or bark grown epiphytes, behave more like Phalaenopsis here. A slow release shell fragment does little for a plant that dries out fast between waterings. That plant needs fast, soluble nutrition instead.
What Most Guides Get Wrong
Many articles claim eggshells for orchids prevent root rot by adding calcium to the pot. Root rot is almost always caused by overwatering, poor airflow, or fungal and water mold pathogens. A calcium shortage is rarely the reason.
A shell in the pot will not fix wet roots or a soggy medium. Treating the actual cause matters far more than any mineral top dressing. That means correct watering and a fresh, well draining mix.
