Most houseplant advice says you can propagate almost anything from a leaf cutting. New orchid owners often assume the same trick works on a Phalaenopsis. It does not.
Cut a leaf off an orchid and set it in water. In nearly every case you get a rotting leaf, not a new plant.
How to propagate orchids successfully depends on which genus you own and which method matches how that plant grows. Community grower forums and orchid society pages return to the same methods again and again: division, keikis, back bulbs, and a few genus specific tricks.
Why Leaf and Stem Cuttings Fail on Most Orchids
African violets and pothos root from a leaf. Every leaf on those plants carries meristem, the growth tissue that can form new roots and shoots. Orchid leaves do not carry that tissue.
The growth points on an orchid sit at the base of the plant, along the rhizome, or at nodes on a flower spike. They are never inside a single detached leaf. That is why cutting a leaf wastes the plant’s energy for nothing.
A stem cutting can work, but only on specific growth habits. Extension horticulture programs describe orchid propagation as division of existing growth points, not regeneration from unrelated tissue.
Most general houseplant guides skip this distinction. They lump orchids in with other tropicals and suggest a leaf or stem cutting in water. That advice sets a beginner up to lose a healthy leaf for nothing.
The method that works depends on growth habit. Sympodial orchids grow sideways along a rhizome, while monopodial orchids grow upward from one stem. Every method below sorts by that difference first.
Genus matters too. A Cattleya and an Oncidium are both sympodial, and both divide well.
A Phalaenopsis and a Vanda are both monopodial. Only the Vanda works as a top cutting, since a Phalaenopsis usually stays too short to cut safely.
Division: The Method for Sympodial Orchids
Sympodial orchids grow sideways along a rhizome. They add a new pseudobulb each season instead of growing taller from one stem. Cattleya, Oncidium, and Cymbidium all grow this way, which is why division is the most reliable way to propagate orchids in this group.
Orchid society guidance and grower experience agree on one rule: keep at least 3 to 4 pseudobulbs per division. A single pseudobulb can survive alone, but it often sulks for a year or two without blooming. A cleaner division bounces back faster.
Divide right after flowering, as new growth starts. Look for a soft green growth tip pushing up at the base of the newest pseudobulb. That new lead signals the plant has stored enough energy to support a split.
Use a sterile blade. Dust the cuts with cinnamon or a fungicide. Pot each division at the same depth it grew before.

Division works well on a mature Cattleya orchid with six or more pseudobulbs. It sets back a plant with fewer. If your plant only has four or five total, skip division and let it grow larger first.
Keikis on Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium
A keiki is a baby orchid that forms on a flower spike or cane, not underground or at the base. Phalaenopsis produce them occasionally on old flower spikes. Dendrobium produce them along mature canes, especially after stress like a dry spell or a temperature swing.
Wait until the keiki has its own roots before you remove it. Two to three inches of firm green root growth gives it enough of a system to survive potting. Remove it too early, with only nubs for roots, and it commonly stalls or dies.
Cut the spike or cane an inch or two on either side of the keiki, using a sterile blade. Pot it in fine bark or sphagnum in a container barely larger than its roots.

Back Bulbs: Slow, Nearly Free, and Often Overlooked
A back bulb is an older, leafless pseudobulb still attached to a sympodial orchid’s rhizome, behind the active growths. It looks finished. The growth eyes at its base are usually still alive.
Cut it free with a clean blade, keeping a bit of rhizome attached. Set it on top of damp sphagnum rather than burying it. Some back bulbs sprout within a few months.
Others sit dormant for up to two years before a new shoot appears. Patience matters more than technique here.
Check for life before you commit a back bulb to this process. Squeeze it gently.
A firm, green bulb with a visible bud eye is worth potting. A soft or hollow bulb is already dead and will only rot.
This is the cheapest propagation method, since you are using tissue most growers throw away. It is also the slowest path to a bloom, often two to three years from a bare back bulb to a first flower.
Most guides describe back bulbs as a last resort, but that undersells them. Growers who repot a large Cattleya or Cymbidium often discard the oldest bulbs out of habit. Potted separately instead, those same bulbs are free plants.
Cane Cuttings: Dendrobium Only, and Only Some Types
Cane cuttings work on deciduous, cane type Dendrobium, sometimes called nobile type. This is the kind that drops its leaves seasonally and blooms along bare canes.
Cut a mature leafless cane into sections a few inches long. Each section needs at least two nodes. Lay the pieces on damp sphagnum in a humid spot.
Dormant buds at the nodes can sprout into small plantlets. Separate them once they grow their own roots.
This does not work reliably on evergreen, thin cane Dendrobium hybrids. Those canes rarely carry the same dormant buds.
Check what type of Dendrobium orchid you have before you cut into a cane. Guessing wrong wastes a healthy growth for nothing.
Top Cutting: The Vanda Method
Vanda and other monopodial orchids grow upward from a single stem. Division is not an option.
Over years, a Vanda can get tall and leggy. Bare stem and aerial roots sit below a cluster of leaves up top.
If that top section has 2 or more healthy aerial roots, cut it free below the lowest root and pot it separately. The remaining base, still rooted, usually pushes out new side growth within a few months.
Cut too low, without enough roots on the top piece, and it struggles to establish. Wait for more roots to form before you try again.
Seed: Why Home Growers Rarely Try It
Orchid seeds have no stored food supply, unlike most other seeds. In nature they depend on a specific soil fungus to germinate at all. That is one reason orchid populations recover so slowly in the wild.
Growing orchids from seed at home means sterile flasking on nutrient agar. That is a lab style process most hobbyists never attempt. Commercial growers do it in controlled labs, and even there, seedlings take years to reach blooming size.
For nearly every home grower, vegetative methods are the only practical option. Seed propagation belongs to nurseries and breeding programs, not the average windowsill.

Keiki Paste: What It Is and How Well It Works
Keiki paste is a lanolin based gel carrying a synthetic cytokinin, a plant hormone that triggers cell division. Growers apply it to a node on a Phalaenopsis flower spike or a Dendrobium cane. First they nick the papery sheath that covers the node.
It works best, and most predictably, on Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium. Those are the same genera that produce keikis naturally on their own.
The honest catch is that it does not guarantee a keiki. Growers consistently report that a treated node sometimes produces a new flower spike instead of a plantlet. There is no reliable way to predict which outcome you will get on any single try.

If your orchid grows sideways with multiple pseudobulbs, like a mature Cattleya, divide it once it has 6 or more pseudobulbs. If it is a Phalaenopsis or Dendrobium that already pushed out a keiki, wait for its roots.
If you own a leggy Vanda with bare stem below its leaves, top cut it once that top section has roots. If you want more plants from a genus that already keikis naturally, keiki paste is worth trying. Expect mixed results, not a guarantee.
